Homemade Moisturizer Recipe for Face – Can’t be More Simple…
In this simple homemade moisturizer recipe for face I mix aloe vera gel with a little oil. That’s it!
My Homemade Moisturizer Recipe for Combination Skin
- 4 tsp of aloe vera gel. I use Lily of the Desert, but you can also take the gel directly from an aloe vera leaf.
- 1 tsp hazelnut oil (it regulates excess sebum). Other vegetable oils that can be used for moisturizing a combination skin (oily T-zone) are: almond oil, wheat germ oil, grape seed oil.
Directions: Mix the ingredients till a homogeneous gel is attained.
Result: an aloe vera gel moisturizer with a very pleasant texture and a non-greasy finish.
Homemade Moisturizer Recipe Variations
- Oily Skin: aloe vera gel can be combined with grape seed oil (it regulates the process of skin greasing);
- Dry Skin: aloe vera gel + almond oil, avocado oil, rose-hip seed oil or olive oil. To choose the most appropriate oil for your skin, check the properties and uses of 19 healing vegetable and carrier oils.
Tip: Apply the homemade aloe vera gel moisturizer right after bath to “lock” the moisture in your skin.

Is there a substitute for aloe vera gel because when I use aloe on my face it leaves me with bumpy skin.
Hi Kay! This is a very good question, but unfortunately I don’t know the answer.
What I can tell you for sure is that you can use the oil(s), suitable for your skin, even without the aloe vera.
Your skin won’t feel or look oily and it will be of added value if you apply the oil right after bath, when the skin pores are open.
Thank you so much for dropping by!
I have difficult to please skin which breaks out with ease but can also tend to feel dry easily if not moisturized properly. It has been a rather high maintenance ordeal for a low maintence-type-a-girl. It is frustrating to find a pretty good (it never seems to be perfect, but at least has pretty natural ingredients and doesn’t cause me to break out) moisturizer, which of course always costs at least upwards of $20 for a just a few ounces, only to eventually have it no longer be carried locally (e.g. Yes To Tomatoes). Such was the case for me recently.
I have also slowly been turning to DIY recipes for some of our family’s day-to-day routines. So, finding this aloe vera gel and grape seed oil DIY approach piqued my interest. To say I was skeptical, would be a big understatement, re: sensitive combo skin as aforementioned. BUT, I was running low on my commercial moisturizer and putting in a Vitacost order anyhow, so I threw a bottle of aloe and grapeseed oil on the order for good measure. Heck they only cost around $9 total and both organic and a good size, too. Got the goods, mixed them up about 3:1-4:1 ratio favoring the aloe and tried it out. My face, esp in the middle of my face, got red after the first few uses. I was a bit concerned but decided to keep with it as it didn’t burn and the redness went away in about 10mins. I did notice almost right away that my skin looked a lot better, my pores were smaller, my skin felt moisturized deeply and the tone of my skin much more radiant…even the week before my cycle. This stuff also nicely addressed a prominent period zit that needed attention.
I don’t typically take so much time to post a review, but this has already been such an amazing skin care improvement in my routine that I just had to share, incase there are others who may benefit from my review. It is so simple, natural and inexpensive…I love everything about it! It probably won’t be so perfect for everyone, but dang it is nice to finally find something that may for once be pretty close to, if to all the way, perfect for mine!!
Thank you so much for sharing your experience! I am very glad you have finally found the right moisturizer for your skin.
Thank you for this recipe. Will definitely give it a try. So desperate for something natural and that works. Most of these store bought items are a disappointment. Thanks again.
Hi … I’m planning to try ur homemade moisturizer. Had a few questions though .
Is it the lily of desert aloe Vera gel that u use ? Also how much quantity can I make at one time and how do I store it ?
Hi Melanie and thank you for stopping by! Yes, I use Lily of Desert aloe vera and when I prepare the moisturizer I store it in the fridge. The quantity depends on whether you can use all of it before its expiration date. The expiration date of the moisturizer is the same as the first expiration date of both the aloe vera and the oil you use. E.g. if the aloe vera expires on 1/31/2013 and the oil expires on 6/30/2013, then your moisturizer is fine to be used till the end of January.
Thanks Nadia .. Looking forward to try it
Just wanted to know if there is any difference between almond and sweet almond oil ? Can I use one of them with the aloe gel ?
You can mix aloe vera with almond oil, but be sure that it is sweet almond oil.
I just made the moisturizer and looking forward to try it too. Can u suggest any natural fragrant oil n the quantity to add to make this moisturizer a little more fragrant ?
If you like the smell of vanilla, you can make infused vanilla oil. This will take some time, but the smell you get is great.
Choose the oil that is appropriate for your skin and add one vanilla bean divided in two and finely chopped.
For 2 – 4 Tbsp of oil 1 vanilla bean is sufficient. Add a few drops of vitamin E.
Put the bottle with the oil and the vanilla bean(s) in a dark (to avoid the oxidation due to light) and warm place. I usually wrap the bottle with paper and put it on the radiator, if its winter or near a sunny window, if it’s summer.
Filter the mixture in about three weeks. Add the aloe vera.
If you want the vanilla oil now, there are shops where you can buy infused vanilla oil.
Thanks Nadia
